I am a mother, grandmother, veteran and amateur conservationist and naturalist. I have led an extraordinary life of love and passion, change and transition, wonder and loss, mastery and blunder, laughter and tears, travel and solitude, and above all, the celebration of the beauty The Great Spirit has surrounded me with. I have spent the vast majority of my life in large cities all over the country and world, working in offices and surrounded by brick and mortar. I traded skirts and dresses for chain saws, stockings and garters for tractors, and curlers and hair spray for hand tools.
Now in retirement, I wish to pass on to the world visions of my life as seen through windows into my soul. Each panel tells a story that weaves wisdom and nature with the unrealistic expectations society places on women. Rosewood art is about female empowerment, and I hope it speaks to you.
Rosewood is very rural acreage that has been completely rewilded and given back to nature, The woods have gone through the Timber Stand Improvement Program and the large field has been converted from hay to entirely native plants, flowers and grasses. I have catalogued well over 100 different species of native flowers to date. I have lovingly installed two ponds, soft edges, brush piles and random trails, all designed to create a wilderness where all forms of wildlife can thrive.
It was always my lifelong goal to give back to The Creator all I have taken in my life. Rosewood lives and breathes, has a heartbeat and a rhythm, and whispers and sometimes screams to those who have the ability and will to listen. Rosewood is truly a remarkable place!
Nature was not put here to serve us, we were put here to serve nature. It speaks to us through the plants, trees, animals, insects and birds, the air and the earth, the water and the wind, and through its beauty and fury. It is an acquired state to hear it and only happens when you open your heart to its messages. The spirit animals of Rosewood that make themselves known to me are predominantly birds. The realization was nothing short of an epiphany and only came to me after starting the tireless and ongoing work of returning this land to The Creator. My art expresses this way of life and is incorporated into every panel of every story.
The spirit of Rosewood art centers around the unrealistic expectations society places upon women to be everything while never threatening anyone. Buy a house but there are no houses to buy... make money but not too much money... be the boss but don't be bossy... be attractive but not too attractive... be thin but not too thin. Rosewood art sets out to define these unrealistic expectations while offering an emotional tool kit to the modern woman which helps her navigate this difficult world. Such ideas are represented in art titled "refuse to know your place" and "she became her own light". The Rosewood logo, The Muddle Headed Girl, represents us all... just a little off kilter, just a little off balance, but she always has her heart in the right place. She is meant to inspire and empower.
At age 9, I held my first public art show at a local library. Shortly after, an uncle showed up bearing gifts. As he was gay and shunned by the family, it was the only time he was ever allowed in that house. He was an artist doing extensive work in photography, ink, charcoal, pencil and especially pastels. He gave me this box of Grumbacher pastels, vintage 1965. In every one of my hundreds upon hundreds of drawings, there are some of these pastels in them. I was lucky enough to tell him late in his life, show him some of my artwork, and pointed out where his pastels were. It makes me proud to pass this tradition to every piece of Rosewood Art.
The Muddle Headed Girl is not confused. She feels cornered, trapped and frustrated due to the unrealistic expectations placed upon her by modern society. Buy a house but there are none to buy. Have babies but do it without health care. Get a job but be happy with 30% less pay. Vote but we'll just change the laws anyway. Have empathy but only for the right people. Be outspoken but know your place. Be yourself but submit to the powers that be. Be the boss but don't be bossy or you are a bitch.
The Muddle Headed Girl represents us all and especially resonates with Millennials and Gen Z. "Never confused, just a little off kilter, just a little off balance, but her heart is always in the right place." Are you tired of the mixed signals too?
